To carry Spirit’s light to world-winter night

There are cycles within cycles of life and change. This beautiful verse was written for Winter Solstice Week in The Calendar of the Soul by Rudolf Steiner. It speaks of the ascension process as he saw it early in the 20th century. Here we are preparing to enter 2022 — approximately 100 years later — and it is the very thing we are still doing, but in a much more comprehensive way, thanks to all that went before. This experience is the awakening to unity that allows us to co-create the new world in partnership with the One that many call God.
Winter Solstice is the darkest day of the year and the longest night. During this darkness we have to call upon our reserves of light, love, trust, gratitude and endurance. With so little light in the world, we are forced to go deep to access those reserves. And in doing that we awaken our deeper potentials for truth and wholeness, though we may find those basements of our souls also hold darker elements we have to heal and ascend while we are there.
Our world is in one of those longer cycles of darkness where we have to exert ourselves to stay in our true co-creative reality. Everywhere we turn there are troubles. It takes a deliberate choice to make a quiet, peaceful and joyful place for ourselves and within ourselves. And once we do, the demands of life don’t let us just stay there. But we can and need to use that peaceful place as a retreat to recharge our depths of soul with light and love and truth. Whether we do that through meditation or relaxation, self-healing or time with family and pets, we need to make the time for it regularly or else burn out.
You are beautiful, strong souls, and this is your time to shine. Like stars in the sky on the long Solstice night, you are lifting the world into a better place moment by moment in your lives. It is a birthing process, and like most births it has challenges. Stay centered and strong and hold faith with the light within, even if it is just a tiny seed of hope and trust sometimes – a reaching toward gratitude and love from a tired soul.
Recognize that the very darkness and weight of the old world and the discomforts it brings on every level of our being forces us to do the very workout that will open the doors of the new world experience. You never know when in forgiving, accepting, finding gratitude for and letting go of the darkness and focusing on the light within your own experience, something huge will release and clear for the world. When this happens, the light opens up within us and we see everything in such glorious clarity and beauty that all doubt flees. In these moments we know why we are here and what we are about at this time in the world. We are not here to suffer, though it is very hard to be here sometimes. We are here to bring the light into the darkness so the new world can be born. We are co-creators with God of a unity and wholeness, beauty and experience that is the destiny we have worked toward since the dawn of creation. Now is the time we let go of the old suffering so we can receive the fruits of our long labors. So don’t identify with suffering. Identify with the light that breaks through during those moments of success, that is who we really are.

Winter Solstice is Next Tuesday. There is a depth of peace to be discovered when we surrender to and accept the dark, cold night with trust and an open heart. It is like an available womb ready to receive the light of unconditional love into our world, into our homes, families and lives. To co-create the new.
Meditations and rituals involving candles, fires, prayers for healing and ascending can be particularly potent to help co-create the new world within that available womb during this season. I like to do a simple ritual/meditation using fire in any form within a container that will allow me to burn small pieces of paper safely – a cooking pot lined with foil with a tea candle or two within it works well. On the paper I write my prayers and let the fire burn them and carry them into the Oneness. These may be prayers for forgiveness and healing or prayers for co-creating. I like to do this anytime between now and the new year. It can be very private or with friends.
But any moment when you stop and breathe the winter air, honor the darkness of the night and welcome unconditional love to be born into the world is a potent ritual of healing and ascension.
